If he just asks how you’re doing, he could be trying to make conversation with friends that he may feel awkward around.

He’s Made the Decision Not to Date

There is a good chance that by making the decision not to get involved in anyone else, your ex boyfriend is leaving the door open to see what would happen with you. On the other hand, it is also possible that he is just giving himself a brief break from dating. This is a strong possibility if the two of you were in a relationship for a long time. Before jumping to conclusions about whether your ex is over you or not, try to determine his motives. Do keep in mind that once he does begin dating, it is likely that he has moved on.
